Importance of the internet d. Role of mobile devices The LGUs, prior to landfall of typhoon Lando, did a preemptive evacuation of their people in identified catch areas. This proactive approach in disaster preparedness limited the casualties to a bare minimum. The heavy rainfall and strong winds damaged a lot of properties but a lot of lives were saved. Proactive approach to disaster preparedness should be exercised in the household and office levels. Knowledge of “what to do” during impending disaster will definitely save lives, if not your own life, there should be an effort among business owners to conduct seminars on disaster preparedness. Social Media and the internet have proven to be the best and fastest way in disseminating information. Twitter being one of the most effective and fastest ways of finding out information about typhoons, traffic situation, flooded areas, etc, one cannot disregard the fact that at this age of technology, we need to be in touch through social media not for “socials” alone but as a way to be informed. The speed of making information “live” at such great speed and accuracy is an effect the increase in ownership of “smart phones” and other mobile devices like tablets. News are brought to as at almost real time. We need to tap more into the power of the internet, social media, and mobile devices not only to stay connected with friends, increase business awareness but also use these as a platform to keep ourselves safe and prepared from impending disaster.
