Our top car picks for every budget
Suzuki Celerio (AT)
Your 2018 P500,000+ Car
Php 569,000 (Php 796,600*)
Stand out from the Toyota Wigo and Mitsubishi Mirage crowd with this gentle little macho.
It’s way more affordable than its Php600,000*+ competitors, offering way more fuel efficient mileage, up to 28km/L with highway driving, and 16-18km/L in mixed city and highway driving.
With good legroom feeling close to a Suzuki Swift, this overlooked AT transmission little beauty is a home run at Php569,000*.
2018 Toyota Yaris (1.3 E AT)
Your 2018 P800,000+ Car
Php 877,000 (Php 964,700*)
When it comes to looks, performance, and availability of parts, the Honda City was supposed to win this round.
But then, 2017’s buzzer-beater announcement from Toyota made our jaws drop by surprise.
Taking in some of the design elements of the North American Toyota Corolla Altis, the new 2018 Toyota Yaris is a far cry from the current Toyota Yaris.
With colors and design elements that pop, it’s sure to speak to millennials or millennials-at-heart.
With features such as a keyless entry with push-start button, to a very Toyota-like techie steering wheel with audio/calls button, this 15.3 km/L highway car screams BUY ME.
Ford EcoSport (1.5L Trend MT Black Edition)
Your 2018 P800,000+ SUV
Php 868,000 (Php 954,800*)
What the Ford EcoSport lacks at in this price point (an AT transmission and several high-tech features), it makes up for in style.
The sleek, sporty, EcoSport runs over the style department with black rims, a black grille, and black side mirrors. It might not seem much on paper, but you’ll have to see it to be wowed by it.
Under the hood, it’s still the same EcoSport everyone’s grown to know and love: 7.9km/L in traffic, and 14.8 km/L on the highway. A great buy all the way
Honda Civic (1.8 E CVT)
Your 2018 P1M+ Car
Php 1,115,000 (Php 1,338,000*)
It’s been almost two years since this car came out but it still can’t stop turning heads in its direction.
The wide, ultra-sporty, Honda Civic mixes in fun driving in a sexy high-tech package. Our favorite feature? Starting the car and turning on the AC from just the key fob. Gone are the days where you had to enter an oven instead of a car this coming summer.
With cushy suspensions for those long drives to the province, to an awesome 8.78km/L gas consumption at an average 16 km/h (think EDSA traffic), this is one awesome car to start your year with.
2018 Suzuki Vitara (GLX)
Your 2018 P1M+ SUV
Php 1,048,000 (Php 1,257,600*)
Another buzzer-beater that edged out another Honda (sorry, Honda BR-V!), the long-time stagnant, boring, Grand Vitara was replaced this month with the all-new 2018 Suzuki Vitara.
With a two-tone color scheme, leather/suede seats, a panoramic sunroof, ultrasonic sensors for parking, a reverse camera, automatic on/off lights, rain sensing wipers, and a push-start button, you’ll be wondering how you got a cool, sporty, SUV to just a little over Php1.2M.
Reviews about its 1.6L engine is still something to look forward to, but at this price-to-value ratio, we’re keeping an eye on this beauty.
Subaru XV (2.0i-S CVT)
Your 2018 P1.5M+ Car
Php 1,538,000 (Php 1,845,600*)
The moment this crossover landed from Japan a couple years back, it already caught our eye.
From the aggressive edges of its exterior, to the high-tech cockpit inside, it felt way different from other Subarus. It was the first time we say a car that leaned away from the Subaru performance enthusiast, and more towards the everyday driver.
What it lacks in the Impreza-feeling driving, it makes up for with driver-friendly features. From LED headlamps that follows your steering, to climate control ACs, and a moonroof. Owning a Subaru feels more reasonable, even when you’re not planning on joining a Rally competition.
Parts may be a bit expensive for a Subaru in case something goes wrong under the hood, but you wouldn’t be worrying about that if you’re considering a Php1.8M+ crossover, will you?
Honda CR-V (V Diesel 9AT)
Your 2018 P1.5M+ SUV
Php 1,569,000 (Php 1,882,800*)
Honda is on a roll this year when it comes to sporty, aggressive designs.
From the all-new City, Civic, BR-V, Jazz, and even the Mobilio RS, you’d think that they’d eventually bring their CR-V up to speed. And you’re right.
You might not see a lot of it on highways right now, and that’s thanks heavily to the Php1.8M+ price tag.
This stealthy beast brags a fuel-efficient (18.52km/L on the highway!) 1.6L diesel engine with cool features such as a keyless entry/push-start button, an 8-speaker setup, and a convenient Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control System, perfect for the huge, 7-seater interior.
It might not have the high-tech features of its more expensive siblings (parking sensors, sunroof, etc.), the styling, convenience, and fuel-efficiency (Remember, it’s a diesel!) of the all-new CR-V makes up for it at this price point.
